Abstract

This article describes the role of Afosha in addressing the socio-economic problems of Tulluu Kosorruu Oromo, Ethiopia. This study employed a qualitative research approach, and the tools of data collection methods used for this study were semi-structured interviews, in-depth interviews, non-participant observation and focus group discussions. The collected data were analysed through narrative or textual methods. The findings of this study reveal that Afosha plays a great role in solving sociocultural issues like resolving conflicts during funerals, difficult times, or challenges; reducing unemployment and underemployment; and during happiness, like marriages. Different from this sociocultural aspect, the role of Afosha is a way for the community of the study area to help each other during times when manpower is needed from their members. Besides, they use Afosha to lend money to treat each other in times of illness, sickness, and famine and also to reduce poverty. Functionalism theory was used for this study to prove the data in anthropological fashion considering the view that society is a system with interconnected pieces that foster solidarity and stability. Afosha is also the key to keeping the solidarity and unity as well as the health of social structure and individual interest. Lastly, this social-based organization may be encouraged by government and non-government.
