Abstract

The main objective of this research was to analyse discourse of the Afaan Oromo in the new Language curriculum of the Primary Education System of Addis Ababa City Administration with a particular focus on texts and other semiotics by critical discourse analysis. The discourses on Afaan Oromoo education on texts and symbols performed at the office level and schools are explained. The design of this research is description-interpretation and explanation, which are types of the qualitative methods used in the critical discourse analysis. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques were employed to select subjects of the study. The data collection tools were observation, interviews and focus group discussions. While fifteen informants (from Ababa Education Bureau and three sub-cities and from primary schools teachers from the sub-cities) provided  data to interview guiding questions, 19 participants (from Addis Ababa Education Bureau and three sub-cities and rimary school teachers from the cub-cities) participated in focus group discussion.. The findings of the study indicated that there was a contradictory ideology in language use regarding texts and symbols as well as practices of Afaan Oromoo language and that of Amharic Language. In many places, this is illustrated by the fact that existing language uses have focused on a language learning program in texts, existing practices and signs where inequality of languages use, i.e., domination of one language use ideology over the other was observed from the results of the data analysed. The researcher recommended that although the ideologies on language use cannot be fully reconciled, the words, signs and actions that appear need to be worked on by making different decisions for both language learning programs.
